about

As a child I was fortunate to move from my home town of London to the Isle of Wight. I loved the whole experience of living by the sea. I learned to sail, and more importantly taught by my teacher to play guitar. I love seeing the beaches full of happy people in the summer, but enjoy it even more in the winter when there is a gale blowing and everywhere is closed. This song is loosely based on Sandown on the Isle of Wight, but could be almost and ‘bucket and spade’ seaside town.

lyrics

The timber on the pier is rotting
Paint’s peeling off the wall
Theatre posters have faded
Twisted railings, tortured by the storm

All the seafront lights are broken
By stones throw by kids
Frayed flags flutter and dance
Wave to passing ships

This is my seaside town
This is my seaside town
This is the seaside town
Where I live

Beach huts are a hang-out
Standing against the squalls
I can smell the lager and cigarettes
The stench of piss on the walls

Fishermen climb over padlocked gates
To get to the end of the pier
Hunched on the wall like cormorants
Fuelled by hot chilli and ice cold beer

Chorus

Newspapers hang in windows
Sunglasses, buckets and spades
All the shops are closed for the winter
Except for the penny arcade

In a doorway teenagers kiss
At their age I did the same
Not wanting to be seen
By family or friends

Chorus

The whole town cries
As it waits for spring
After last years summer
Will anyone come again
Standing on the sand
I taste the salt on my face
Who’d be here at this time of year
And love it, like I love this place

Children play on the beach
Wrapped in their scarfs and hats
Defending castles from rising tides
Modern day King Canutes

The holiday seasons coming
The town wakes, stretches and yawns
Given a make-over one more time
This decaying place is reborn

Chorus
