about

Back in the 80’s, I was talking to homeless guy who was living rough on the streets of The Strand, London. I had purchased him a coffee and he shared his life story and experiences with me. I wrote down his name, but over the years that piece of paper got lost. This is for him, and every rough sleeper in the world.

lyrics

To the city I came, chasing adventure
To join in the commuter parade
If I’m smart
I’ll see through their lies

The city has a cross to bear
And the winter cuts a chilly air
Deserted street echo footsteps
Graffitied walls scream despair

But my shoes are leaking and I feel the cold
Of Kings and Queens and castles I’ve been told
No use in fighting
I’ll be slayed for sure

Morning sun shines over rooftops
Shafts of gold that can’t be spent
I’m down and out, lost in pity
Something I have never sought

No one round here seems to care
The city lights start to glare
Evening brings an eerie sound
The day has ended, go underground

Chorus

Strangers sleep in doorways
They started out like me
Money gone, clothes in rags
Wondering where I’ll get another meal

Chorus

Rain soaks deep into my soul
Another year takes its toll
Darkness cloaks the chilly streets
The city sighs and goes to sleep

To the city I came, chasing adventure
I should have seen through all their lies
This is where I’m gonna die
